Chief’s Welcome

Welcome, relatives and friends,

On behalf of the Roanoke-Hatteras people, I welcome you to our homeland and to this space where our story continues to live.

We are the descendants of the original Algonquian peoples of the North Carolina coast — people who have lived along these waters, islands, and marshlands since time beyond memory. Though history has often spoken about us, this site exists so we may speak for ourselves: to honor our ancestors, to affirm our identity, and to share who we are today.

Our people never vanished. We remained here — on Roanoke Island, Hatteras Island, and the surrounding mainland — carrying our traditions through family, faith, work on the water, and a deep responsibility to the land. Through generations of change, our community endured by holding fast to kinship, memory, and respect for the natural world.

This website is a place of education, connection, and truth. Whether you come as a community member, a researcher, a student, or a visitor seeking understanding, you are welcome here. We invite you to learn our history, attend our gatherings, and walk with us as we preserve our culture for future generations.

We move forward with pride in who we are, guided by our ancestors and responsible to our children yet to come.

Tapuni for being here, and may you walk in respect.

With honor,

Marilyn Berry Morrison,

Principal Chief
Roanoke-Hatteras Tribe of
North Carolina

Land Acknowledgment

We acknowledge that this website and our work exist upon the ancestral and present-day homelands of the Roanoke-Hatteras people — the Algonquian peoples of the coastal lands, sounds, rivers, and barrier islands of what is now called northeastern North Carolina. These lands and waters have sustained our ancestors for countless generations and continue to sustain our people today. We honor those who came before us, those who remain, and those yet to come, and we affirm our enduring relationship and responsibility to this homeland.
